Australian Capital Territory
Australian Capital Territory is Australia's smallest state and home to the capital of Australia, Canberra. Surrounded by the mountainous Great Dividing Range and with over 53 percent of the state marked as reserves and parks, the crisp, fresh air is noticeable all through this region.
There are two main reasons to explore the state, one is the Namadgi National Park and the other is Canberra city, which is home to parliament house.
Canberra
Canberra is home to 347,000 people and many of them are involved directly or indirectly with politics. The Parliament House is a spectacular building with amazing gardens surrounding it, and it include the famous kaleidoscope garden that changes with the seasons. Pristine bush land, parks as well as a few wineries surround the city itself, as you make your way into the centre.
Vast cycle-ways were built throughout city and make a great option for exploring on a budget. Like any other city in Australia, Canberra offers plenty of options to eat on a budget, including cooking in your hostel after shopping in one of the large supermarkets, as well as the usual take away stores, from fish and chips through to some great Thai food.
There are a wealth of museums, art galleries and attractions, including tours through parliament house for those interested in politics, or perhaps just architecture, as there are fine examples of both. With a great selection of bars and clubs to choose from, you will be able to find a great night out in the city, including heading to Old Parliament House for a few beers with live DJ’s.
The National Zoo and Aquarium is Australia's only combined zoo and aquarium, also boasting the largest inland aquarium and the largest collection of big cats in Australia. You can even have a meet a cheetah experience!
The most amazing views of Canberra are at Black Mountain tower with 360 degrees views day and night. Or jump in a hot air balloon for an even better view.
For the adventurous, there are several companies, who offer adventure tours that really can get the heart pumping. A couple of great local companies are Mr. Spokes bike hire, Lake Burley Boat Hire and R.E.A.L fun adventures. You can jump on a bike tours, bus tours or 4WD tours. There are also several dedicated mountain bike trails for the thrill seeker. You can go on a day and overnight bushwalks in the surrounding areas through spectacular forests.
A bounty of wineries surrounding Canberra, gives you the chance to sample some excellent Australian wine.
Namadgi National Park
This extensive National Park consumes nearly half the total area of the Australian Capital Territory. It is an amazing place to experience the Australian bush, with great wildlife and dramatic granite outcrops throughout the region.
For those seeking a thrill, there is great rock climbing. You can find Aboriginal Rock paintings, quarries and campsites from over 20,000 years ago of native inhabitancy, on your bushwalks exporting the area. You can experiences variety of natural settings in a relatively small area, anything from rolling plains of grass to the earlier mentioned granite and rugged hills lined with snow gums. Tours and guided walks are available, but you can also well pick up a guidebook or map for walking tracks and explore it on your own.
