Kangaroo Island is an amazing island with a spectacular landscape, gorgeous beaches, majestic forests and National Parks. The ferry is a 112 kilometres trip from Adelaide. Kangaroo Island is relatively small, about 50 kilometres wide and 140 kilometres long. However, even though the island seems small, you can and should spend at least 2 days there. You do not want to rush exploring the island.
As the name suggests you can see kangaroos on the island, but also a lot of other animals, such as koalas sitting in eucalyptus and gum trees around the river system. Koalas sleep between 19 and 20 hours a day due to their low intake of nutrients and the lengthy digestive process required by their diet of eucalyptus leaves. The koalas are most active during the night. If you want to see koalas, the best places to find them on Kangaroo Island are at Hanson Bay and the Western KI Caravan Park. Other amazing animals you can find on Kangaroo Island are the Australian sealion. They often relax on the beach at Seal Bay, as they spend half their time in the water and the other half on land. Another incredible animals are the New Zealand fur seals, which you can encounter around Cape du Couedic. If you are near Kingscote at the end of the day, you can see a local pelican feeding display. It is a great way to get close up and personal with the wildlife and a fun show to watch.
You have to go to Flinders Chase National Park, if you are visiting Kangaroo Island. It is an amazing wildlife experience with amid spectacular landscapes. Go bushwalking along the trails or go down to the stunning beaches to see New Zealand fur seals play along the West Bay.
There are a lot of guided tours on Kangaroo Island, where you can learn about the nature and the animals and get the facts and history behind the Island, but you can also drive yourself and explore the nature in your own way. No matter what you choose, you will get an incredible experience. If you choose to drive yourself be aware of the wildlife, especially during the dawn, dusk and nighttimes. You can easily hit a kangaroo or another animal if you are not careful.
There are a lot of different activities to do on Kangaroo Island, including surfing, which is a well kept secret here. There are some really good surfing breaks around Kangaroo Island, no matter if you are a beginner or advanced surfer, though you need to have a 4WD to get access to some of the beaches. Most importantly you need to respect both the environment and the locals. For advanced surfers Hanson Bay is the place to go when the wind comes from the north-east to northerly wind. The same accounts for D’Estrees Bay when the wind comes from north-west to Westerly wind, and you also need a 4WD vehicle to access this area. Beginner surfers should go to Vivonne Bay with a north-east to Westerly wind. The closer to the western end of the beach you are, the smaller the waves. When the wind comes north-east, the beginner surfer can check out Pennington Bay, and Stokes Bay for a Southerly wind.
